It won’t be like this forever is written on the sign that choreographer Moritz Ostruschnjak carries across the stage, while dancer Daniel Conant pretends to be on the shoelace. DANCE INSTRUCTIONS is full of such self-reflective and ironic references that defy clear attribution. Ostruschnjak stays true to his eclectic style of recent productions, letting his soloist effortlessly switch from shoelace to grand jeté, from boxtriple step to breakdance move and from référence to rope jumping. The uniting element is the sound, that stomping, clapping, breathing, jumping, feathers that fills the space as a continuous rhythm. The protagonist tirelessly works his way through the highly diverse canon of movement, taking up poses of resistance, struggle and victory, stylized masculinity, youth culture, classical ballet, ballroom or sport in rapid succession – an absurd sequence of divergent elements that overlap, ironize and countercarry each other and, in combination, lead playfully but ruthlessly, into the abyss.

Moritz Ostruschnjak’s work deals with the changes in physical and social experience in times of digitalization and virtualization. Spaces made of hyperlinks are his works that use the media machinery of the 21st century as a motif and fundus and thus mirror as well as reflect social processes. According to the working principle Pick & Mix, Cut & Paste, the most heterogeneous elements and links emerge the narrative of a reality in which politics, entertainment and populism are increasingly blurred. Coming from the spray scene, Moritz Ostruschnjak developed his interest in contemporary dance through breakdance. He studied at Iwanson International in Munich and completed his training with Maurice Béjart in Lausanne.
Since 2013 he has been working as a freelance choreographer in Munich. His production “UNSTERN” has been selected for the TANZPLATFORM DEUTSCHLAND 2020. In January 2021 his new production with the working title “How many angels can dance on the head of a pin?” will have its premiere in Munich.

A production by Moritz Ostruschnjak in cooperation with the Bayerische Staatsoper. The artist is supported by the network Grand Luxe 2019/20 and is a member of Tanztendenz Munich e.V.
