The choreographer Ester Ambrosino’s dance production of Bach’s work “Magnificat” takes an arc into the modern world, starting from the traditional musical performance. Premiered in 2012 against a sacred backdrop in the Cathedral of Erfurt with great success, the current production, intended for the theatre stage, will further translate the contemporary understanding of Bach’s music into first-class dance.

The motivation for the choreography is the Magnificat, which is unusual for Bach’s five-part work: if the sacred work of Bach is musically supported by the orchestra, the choir and the soloists soprano I, soprano II, tenor, alto and bass, five dancers interpret the voices in a choreographic concert. Lyrical movements inspired by the music and the spiritual text transport the sacred, acoustic-concert experience into visually experienceable, spiritual images. With “Magnificat” the 3rd International Tanztheater Festival in Erfurt celebrates its premiere. At the same time, it represents the closing event of the Erfurt Church Music Festival.
